What is GlucoGel?
GlucoGel

GlucoGel, formerly known as HypoStop is an easy to use 40% dextrose gel which has been available in the UK since 1984. It is used by people who require glucose, or are in need of an energy boost.

GlucoGel is also recommended by the National Institute for Clinical excellence for people who need to manage hypoglycaemia.

Why use GlucoGel?

People who take a lot of exercise may follow the example of West Ham United FC and take GlucoGel to provide extra energy.

In addition, people with diabetes who take insulin may be at risk from hypos, which occur when blood sugar levels fall. Hypos can be distressing enough without the added stress of a frantic search for carbohydrates. While sweets and other sugary foods may be consumed by hungry friends and family, GlucoGel can be kept safe for the person for whom it's intended, just in case.

"I would recommend that people with diabetes being treated with insulin should always carry a measure of carbohydrate which can be consumed in the event of hypoglycaemia. Sometimes even the most careful of patients experience hypo, often due to unforeseen circumstances like change in climate or missed meals. Keep something close to hand at all times - it's always better to be prepared."
Professor Anthony Barnett, Professor of Medicine; University of Birmingham, and Head of Endocrine & Diabetes Services; Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.

How much GlucoGel should be taken?

From June 2006, GlucoGel will be available in a triple pack of 25g tubes, or a single 80g bottle. Each tube of Glucogel contains a measure of 10g of carbohydrate, and each bottle contains 32g of carbohydrate.

There are 2 pack sizes because everybody's required level of carbohydrate is different. However, the government's National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends 10g - 20g of rapidly absorbed simple carbohydrate for the treatment of mild to moderate hypoglycaemia in children and young people.

However, if your need for carbohydrate is often greater than 10g, the bottle may be preferable. GlucoGel is particularly useful for storing in the cupboard or by the bedside, so it's always close to hand when needed.

Speak to your pharmacist or healthcare professional about your individual needs.

How is GlucoGel used?

GlucoGel is very easy to use. You simply twist off the cap, squeeze the gel into your mouth and swallow. Alternatively, GlucoGel can be squeezed inside the cheek, and the outside of the cheek gently rubbed to aid absorption.

GLUCOGEL MUST NEVER BE GIVEN TO UNCONSCIOUS INDIVIDUALS BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF CHOKING.
