One of GlucoGel’s customers, Mrs Williams from Cheshire, began using GlucoGel for her much loved Poodle Dodi when he was diagnosed with diabetes 14 months ago.

“I first noticed that Dodi wasn’t himself when he began drinking a lot of water and going to the toilet a lot” explains Mrs Williams. “When I took him to the surgery, the vet carried out a simple blood test, which indicated that Dodi would require regular doses of insulin to help control his blood sugar levels. Just in case his levels dropped, the vet suggested that I have some GlucoGel in the house, so I purchased some from my local pharmacy.”

Mrs Williams’ vet explained that dogs often develop diabetes when they get a little bit older, and that as Dodi is 9 he would fall into this category. However, poodles are one of the breeds that are at high risk of diabetes, along with Samoyeds, Miniature Schnauzers, and Pugs. However, diabetes can affect many other breeds of dogs – especially those that overweight.

“Luckily Dodi doesn’t get low blood sugar very often. The only risky time really is when he has an upset tummy, but because it’s impractical to regularly test dogs’ sugar levels, it’s always good to have something to hand, because you can never really tell when they might get low”.

If Dodi’s levels are low, he is given GlucoGel in the morning and evening. Mrs Williams can tell by Dodi’s body language is he’s feeling low because his head goes down, and his tail goes between his legs (“like he’s been naughty!”). A quick check to see if his heart is racing gives an early indication of hypo.

Mrs Williams adds:

“I like to keep something in the house in case Dodi gets low, and GlucoGel is good because I know exactly where it is, and it’s easy to measure out. I normally use the tubes, but I’ve heard about the bigger bottle so I’m going to give that a try too.”
